Overcomer Shawl: Week 3 CAL

Hey Lovelies!!

How is it already time for week 3?! I feel like the weeks are going way too fast and it’s been a whirlwind of fun! Since some of you may not be part of the CAL Facebook group, you may not know this already. My family lost a very special person this past week.

My husband’s grandfather passed away at 92 years old. He was an amazing person who loved with everything he had and more. Papa was the host with the most, liked to poke fun where he could and was always smiling. He truly was one of the hardest working men I knew and he was always happy to do it. He was an amazing cook, baker, drink maker but most of all, he was an amazing father, grandfather/great grandfather and friend.

I was looking back on all the years I have known him and I have been lucky enough to have known him for half of my life. He has definitely left an impact on my heart and I’m grateful to have been part of his family.

He will always be in my heart.

I think of the first time I met Papa, it was my husband’s grade 12 graduation. Guys, I was terrified. I was 17 years old and I was about to meet Shawn’s entire family. At that point, I had only met his mother and father a couple of times. Well, we walk into his parent’s place and Papa comes up to meet me!

Oh.. was I nervous.. Papa took one look at me, looked at Shawn and asked him how a girl like me was with a guy like him! I had a good giggle and it was in that moment, I knew that if everything went wrong that night, I had a friend. That was also the night I learned that Papa could dance and he was not shy about swinging me around on the dance floor at the graduation dinner. I loved it, it was so much fun. Papa knew how to have a good time and he made sure others were too.

I guess I am telling you all this because in the spirit of overcoming things, grief and loss is hard.

Papa suffered from dementia for the past 3ish years and at the end of his life, his body and mind were failing fast. It was hard to watch this amazing man, who worked hard and played hard, lose mobility and cognitive functions. My mother in law is amazing. She’s incredibly strong and did everything she could to keep Papa safe and cared for. But eventually he ended up in the hospital for a few months due to a fall and a few weeks ago was placed in a home. She visited him all the time and always gave our love to him. We were unable to visit him due to covid restrictions and hospital rules, though we did get to Facetime him when my mother in law was there!

What do you do to cope with loss?

Made By Crystal, Simply Smith Creations

Even though the loss is hard, we are so grateful Papa is free of his broken body and failing mind. He is free and that is an incredible blessing.  Cheers Papa! I hope you are having the greatest party in Heaven.

Have you completed Week 1 and Week 2?

Week 3 of the Overcomer Shawl CAL is going to consist of new stitches, new colour and more progress.
